What is Building Biology?
Building Biology (or Bau Biologie – “building for life” from German) is the study that originated over 45 years ago in Germany out of the necessity for a healthier space for a human to live and work in. The dwellings that were built all over the country after World War 2 were constructed quickly and cheaply, which was perfect for the time, accommodating great housing needs for the post-war population. However, something wasn't right about those new houses. There was a noticeable correlation between certain illnesses that studies were able to associate with living in the newly constructed dwellings.
Professor Anton Schneider, Ph.D. was the first to address the problem in an organized way and in 1976 founded the Institute of Building Biology and Ecology in Neubeuern, where the subject of safe and healthy living space for a human was addressed in a methodical scientific order.
Today principles of Building Biology are leading the way of a holistic home environment all over the world. This is by far the safest and most trustworthy approach for anyone that chooses to make their homes and offices safe and healthy.
Why Building Biology?
More people move towards and choose a healthy lifestyle. Smoking (conventional cigarettes) is way outdated today, organic food market is flourishing as demand for it is growing, yoga and meditation became popularized to the point of becoming a mainstream activity. As per the safety and health of our homes and offices, attention to it is usually given after something goes wrong. And it's understandable, as an adverse effect of an unhealthy dwelling is usually silent and invisible in the beginning. In fact, some of the health problems might never "officially" find the link to the real cause hidden in the living or working environment of a person.
People reach out for the help of a building biology specialist when:
◦ they are not feeling well or experience sleep disorders and don’t know exactly why
◦ they are educated about the negative effects of EMR and want to make sure they are not subjected to it
◦ a new baby or children are in the house
◦ moving to a new home
◦ they are ready to increase well-being and productivity in a business setting
◦ they consider or suspect being environmentally or electromagnetically sensitive
Building Biology provides a holistic approach to the environment humans are living or working in. This includes vision of a sustainable future; well-being of neighbors, communities, and the world as a whole; striving for a fully healthy living environment, not limited just to the use of nontoxic building materials; caring about the health of occupants, not just the “green” approach.
